Making Friends at Northwestern: Evanston, the Lakefill and the Train to Chicago

Northwestern gives you a residential lakeside campus in Evanston and a city forty minutes down the Purple Line. Most students use one and forget the other.

Northwestern is the closest thing the Chicago area has to a classic American campus: dorms and quads, a lakefill you can sit on, big-ten sport, and a dense calendar of student theatre, journalism, a cappella and consulting clubs that keeps people busy from September onward. Socially, the raw material is excellent.

The two things worth knowing are that the quarter system makes ten weeks vanish, and that Evanston is a suburb, so the city everyone imagines being part of is a train ride rather than a walk. Both are manageable.

01 — What the campus is actually like

What the campus is actually like

  • Residential and walkable. Most undergraduates live on or near campus, so proximity does a lot of the social work for you.
  • Activity-dense. Theatre, student media, dance, a cappella, club sport, consulting and pre-professional groups all run at semi-serious levels. Involvement is the norm, not the exception.
  • Quarters move fast. Join in week one or the term is gone.
  • Evanston, then Chicago. The Purple Line and the Metra put you downtown in under an hour.
02 — On campus: where friendships actually start

On campus: where friendships actually start

Your dorm and your dining hall

First-year friendships are made on floors and at dining tables. Prop the door open, eat at the same time as your floor, and go to the badly attended residential college event. It is boring advice because it works.

Student groups — the audition-free kind

Northwestern''s highest-profile groups audition, which puts people off. Plenty do not: club sport, intramurals, service groups, cultural organisations, publications that always need writers, and clubs built around a hobby rather than a résumé. Join two in week one and treat attendance as non-negotiable.

Sport as a social calendar

Intramurals and club sport give you weekly repetition, and home football and basketball games give the campus a shared thing to care about. Go with people you barely know; that is the point.

The Lakefill

Northwestern''s lakefront is the best free social space on any Chicago-area campus. Study there, run there, watch the sunrise there in June. Suggesting a lakefill walk is the lowest-pressure invitation available to you.

03 — Off campus: Evanston and the city

Off campus: Evanston and the city

  • Downtown Evanston has cinemas, cafés, bookshops and cheap food within walking distance — enough for a normal social life without leaving town.
  • The Purple Line to the city. Once a month at minimum, get on it. Chicago is the reason you chose here over a rural campus.
  • Chicago in practice: live music, comedy, beaches in summer and street festivals from May to September.
  • The nearest city neighbourhoods are Rogers Park and Edgewater — see Rogers Park and Edgewater, both cheap, both a short ride south.
04 — Grad students, transfers and international students

Grad students, transfers and international students

Graduate students should build the cohort ritual themselves — a standing Friday drink or lunch — because nothing on a campus this undergraduate-focused will do it for them. Transfers should skip residence-hall strategies and go straight for club sport and interest groups, where new faces arrive every quarter. International students often find the cultural associations the fastest door, plus one group unrelated to home so the circle widens.

05 — Your first quarter, in order

Your first quarter, in order

  • Weeks 1–2: activities fair, two commitments, eat with your floor every night.
  • Weeks 3–5: learn names, start a study group, take one lakefill walk with someone new.
  • Weeks 6–8: midterms. Keep one non-academic commitment.
  • Weeks 9–10: take the train into the city with two people before the quarter ends.
06 — Common questions

Common questions

Is Northwestern a friendly campus?

Yes, but it is busy. People are welcoming and overcommitted, so friendships form inside activities rather than in unstructured free time — join things.

Where do Northwestern students hang out?

Dorm lounges and dining halls, Norris and the libraries, the Lakefill in warm weather, and downtown Evanston for food and coffee.

Do students actually go into Chicago?

Less than they expect to. Making it a habit — one trip a month with the same two or three people — is a genuine social advantage.

What if I do not get into an audition group?

Most of the campus does not. Club sport, service groups, publications and cultural organisations take everyone and produce the same friendships.
