The best beaches in Chicago

Ten stretches of lakefront, ranked by how easy it is to end up in a group.

10 places, rankedChicago, IllinoisLast reviewed Meet people in Chicago, Illinois

Chicago has a coastline, which people from elsewhere never quite believe until they see the skyline from the water at Montrose. Twenty-six miles of it is public, free and connected by one trail, and for four months a year it is the single best place in the city to meet people without any plan at all.

Beaches here sort themselves by crowd rather than by sand. North Avenue is the loud, athletic, twenty-something one. Montrose is dogs, kites and birders. Hyde Park is students and families. Pick the beach that matches the people you want to know, then go back to the same one — the volleyball nets and the dog beaches both run on regulars.

Why trust this list: every place here is picked by people who actually go out in Chicago, Illinois — judged on how easy it is to turn up alone, start a conversation and leave having met someone. We take no payment for inclusion, and the list is re-checked (last reviewed August 2026).

The list

The best beaches in Chicago, ranked.

1

North Avenue Beach

Lincoln ParkFreeBest for Volleyball, twenty-somethings, meeting people through sport

The loud, athletic, sociable one — and the best place to join a game.

Chicago''s flagship beach: a boathouse-shaped pavilion, dozens of volleyball courts and a crowd that arrives to do something rather than to lie down. The volleyball is the social key. Turn up to the open-play nets on a weekday evening, ask to join, and you will be playing within ten minutes — the etiquette here is genuinely welcoming.

2

Montrose Beach

UptownFreeBest for Dog owners, kite surfing, spacious weekends

Bigger, calmer and the most local of the North Side beaches.

The largest beach in the city, with a dog beach, a bird sanctuary, kite surfers and enough space that it never feels stacked. Weekend afternoons bring big multi-generational barbecue groups. The dog beach is the easiest place in Chicago to end up in conversation with a stranger, dog optional.

3

Oak Street Beach

Gold CoastFreeBest for After-work swims, skyline photos, downtown workers

Skyline views from a beach ten minutes from the Loop.

The postcard beach: sand in the foreground, the Hancock and the Gold Coast towers directly behind. Small, busy and very central, which makes it the practical after-work swim if you work downtown. The beachside food-and-drink pavilion is the meeting point.

4

Ohio Street Beach

StreetervilleFreeBest for Open-water swimming, early mornings, joining a swim group

The swimmers' beach, with a protected mile-long swim course.

A small crescent of sand that punches above its size because of the water: sheltered, shallow and marked out for long-distance swimming. Chicago''s open-water swim community meets here at dawn all summer, and they are notably friendly to newcomers who show up twice.

5

Foster Avenue Beach

EdgewaterFreeBest for Picnics, quieter afternoons, families

A quieter neighbourhood beach with actual space to spread out.

Foster is where Edgewater goes when Montrose is full. Wide, calm, family-heavy on weekends, and with a stretch of grass behind the sand that works better for a group picnic than the beach itself. Fewer facilities than the big beaches, which is the trade.

6

Kathy Osterman Beach

EdgewaterFreeBest for LGBTQ+ crowds, Sunday groups, skyline views

Curved, grassy and the most relaxed crowd on the North Side.

Also known as Hollywood Beach, this is the North Side''s most easy-going stretch — historically LGBTQ+ friendly, always mixed, and with a wide lawn that fills with groups on Sunday afternoons. The curve of the shoreline gives you a straight-on skyline view down the lake.

7

57th Street Beach

Hyde ParkFreeBest for Hyde Park students, sunsets, South Side afternoons

The South Side beach with the best view back at the city.

Wide, calm water, the Museum of Science and Industry behind you and the full skyline eight miles north across the lake. Popular with University of Chicago students and Hyde Park families. Promontory Point, ten minutes north, is the better spot for a sunset if you do not need sand.

8

12th Street Beach

Near South SideFreeBest for Escaping crowds, Museum Campus days, quiet swims

A hidden beach behind Northerly Island, five minutes from the Museum Campus.

Tucked behind the Adler Planetarium and almost always emptier than it should be, given that it is walkable from the Loop. Good for a swim after a Museum Campus afternoon, and the Northerly Island nature trails behind it turn it into a proper half-day plan.

9

Rainbow Beach

South ShoreFreeBest for South Side locals, Sunday crowds, volleyball

A big South Side beach with a dune sanctuary and a real neighbourhood crowd.

Rainbow has more sand than most of the North Side beaches, plus a restored dune area and a park district fieldhouse running free adult programming. The crowd is South Side locals and it is one of the friendliest beaches in the city on a Sunday.

10

Loyola Beach

Rogers ParkFreeBest for Rogers Park locals, drum circles, pick-up sport

The neighbourhood beach of Chicago's most diverse neighbourhood.

Long, wide and lined with a park that hosts drum circles, pick-up soccer and Rogers Park''s summer festivals. Less polished than the downtown beaches, more sociable than almost all of them. The Red Line runs straight there, which makes it viable from anywhere on the North Side.

Season: officially Memorial Day to Labor Day for lifeguards, but locals use the lakefront from April to October. Water stays cold well into June.

Getting there: the Lakefront Trail links almost every beach on this list; Divvy bikes are the fastest option. Red Line plus a ten-minute walk works for the North Side beaches.

Rules: alcohol is prohibited on Chicago beaches and it is enforced. Dogs only at the designated dog beaches.

Sociable slot: weekday evenings after 5pm for volleyball and run clubs, Sunday afternoons for the big mixed crowds.
