Two floors of Japanese cooking, with a basement izakaya that is the real prize.

Upstairs is a polished dining room; downstairs is a subterranean izakaya with a long bar, whisky highballs and yakitori. The basement is walk-in friendly, cheaper, and considerably more sociable than the room above it.

The Publican is built for exactly the purpose of this website: enormous communal tables, a serious beer list and a menu designed for sharing. Weekend brunch is one of the best in Chicago. Nobody eats alone here even if they arrived alone.
