How to make friends in Allston and Brighton, Boston

Allston and Brighton are where Boston lets its hair down. The neighborhood is young, loud, cheap by Boston standards, and full of people who have not yet settled into adult routines. That is exactly why it is one of the easier places in the city to make friends if you are willing to repeat the same few spots until faces become familiar.

Allston runs on a simple social contract: everyone is broke, no one has a car, and the best things happen within a few blocks of Commonwealth Avenue. The density of students, recent graduates, and musicians creates a culture where meeting people is normal. The downside is that the neighborhood can feel like a four-year party. The upside is that there are more free and low-cost ways to be around people than almost anywhere else in Boston.
