Making Friends at North Park University: A Small Campus in a Big City

From the Journal

North Park is small, residential and tucked into a quiet north-side neighbourhood by the river. Small is an advantage — but only if you leave the campus sometimes.

North Park University occupies a compact, leafy campus in the North Park neighbourhood, next to the Chicago River and a short ride from Albany Park and Lincoln Square. It is small, residential and Christian in tradition, with a student body diverse enough that "everyone knows everyone" is true without being narrow.

A campus this size means you become a familiar face in weeks rather than terms. The risk is not loneliness but insularity — the fix is to use the city that starts at the campus edge.

01 — What the campus is actually like

What the campus is actually like

  • Small and walkable. Everything is minutes apart, so repeated encounters happen naturally.
  • Residential. Most traditional undergraduates live on or near campus, and floor life matters.
  • Community-minded. Chapel, service programmes and small-group culture give you structured ways to meet people that require no confidence at all.
  • Quiet neighbourhood. Green, safe-feeling and residential, with the river trail alongside it.
02 — Where friendships actually start

Where friendships actually start

Your floor and the dining hall

On a small residential campus, eating at the same time as your floor is most of the strategy. Leave your door open in the first fortnight; it is the single highest-return social behaviour of first year.

Student organisations, music and service

North Park runs cultural organisations, service programmes, choirs and ensembles, intramurals and small groups. Choirs and service teams in particular create the repeated shared effort that friendships need.

Athletics and intramurals

Division III athletics and intramural leagues absorb a big share of campus, and you do not need to be good — you need to be there weekly.

Campus jobs

A small campus job puts you beside the same coworkers all term and makes you known across the whole school quickly.

04 — Commuters, transfers and international students

Commuters, transfers and international students

Commuters should stack one long campus day around a club meeting and dinner, and add one commitment near home — a run club or trivia night works. Transfers benefit from the size: join one organisation and you will know a visible slice of the school inside a month. International students will find the cultural organisations and small-group culture unusually welcoming.

05 — Your first term, in order

Your first term, in order

  • Weeks 1–2: two commitments, one musical, athletic or service based; eat with your floor nightly.
  • Weeks 3–6: four consecutive meetings, four names, one coffee in Lincoln Square.
  • Weeks 7–10: keep one commitment through the winter dip.
  • Weeks 11+: plan a group dinner in Albany Park — cheap, easy and memorable.
06 — Common questions

Common questions

Is North Park a friendly campus?

Yes — small, residential and community-oriented, which makes it one of the easier Chicago campuses for first-year friendships.

Where do North Park students hang out?

Residence lounges and the dining hall, the campus green and gym, and Lincoln Square or Albany Park for food and coffee.

Do I need to be religious to fit in?

No. The tradition shapes the calendar, but student organisations, sport and service programmes are open to everyone.

Is the neighbourhood boring for students?

It is quiet, and that is the point — the loud parts of the city are a short bus or train ride away.
