Concordia sits in leafy River Forest, ten miles west of the Loop. Small and residential means friendships come easily — as long as you also learn the Green Line.

Concordia University Chicago is in River Forest, a quiet suburb just west of Oak Park, with a small collegiate-gothic campus, residence halls and a Lutheran tradition that shapes the calendar without dominating it. Education, music and business programmes give it a cohort-heavy culture, and the size means you will recognise most of the people you pass within a month.

The social equation is simple: campus gives you familiarity, and the Green Line gives you a city. Use both.

01 — What the campus is actually like

What the campus is actually like

  • Small and residential. Floors, dining halls and the chapel calendar create constant repeated contact.
  • Cohort-driven. Teacher education, music and business students move through in groups.
  • Suburban setting. River Forest and Oak Park are walkable, green and safe-feeling, with cafés and independent shops on Lake Street and Madison.
  • Chicago is close. The Green Line and the Metra put the Loop within half an hour.
02 — Where friendships actually start

Where friendships actually start

Residence life and the dining hall

The oldest advice remains the best on a small residential campus: eat with your floor, keep your door open in the first two weeks, go to the residence event even when it looks thin.

Music, service and campus ministry

Choirs and ensembles are one of Concordia''s strongest social engines — regular rehearsal with a shared goal is close to a friendship guarantee. Service projects and ministry activities do the same for non-musicians.

Athletics and intramurals

Division III athletics and intramurals absorb a large share of students, and games are a shared social calendar in winter.

Student organisations and teaching cohorts

Programme clubs, honour societies and student government are small enough that joining one makes you visible campus-wide. Education students should lean on their cohort and placement groups — shared classroom hours build fast friendships.

04 — Commuters, graduate and international students

Commuters, graduate and international students

Concordia has a large graduate and adult education population, much of it part-time — for those students the cohort plus one standing pre-class meal is the realistic plan. Commuters should stack one long day and keep a weekly commitment near home. International students will find the small classes make recognition quick, and one non-academic activity in the city keeps the circle from staying campus-only.

05 — Your first term, in order

Your first term, in order

  • Weeks 1–2: join two things, one of them a choir, team or service group; eat with your floor.
  • Weeks 3–6: attend everything you joined, learn four names, coffee in Oak Park once.
  • Weeks 7–10: keep one commitment through the winter slump.
  • Weeks 11+: take the Green Line into the city with two people.
06 — Common questions

Common questions

Is Concordia Chicago a social campus?

Small-scale and friendly rather than lively — friendships form through residence life, ensembles, teams and cohorts.

Where do Concordia students hang out?

Residence lounges and the dining hall, the athletics centre and chapel events, plus Oak Park cafés and restaurants nearby.

Do I need to be Lutheran?

No. The tradition shapes some of the calendar; student life, sport and clubs are open to everyone.

How often do students go into Chicago?

Less than they plan to. Putting one monthly trip in the diary with the same two or three people is the fix.
