The run club is the modern pub
Running solves two problems at once: you move, and you talk shoulder to shoulder rather than face to face, which makes conversation far easier. Almost every city now has free weekly clubs with pace groups for beginners.
How to join in
- Find a free weekly club with a slow group and turn up twice before deciding.
- Do the local parkrun. Free, timed, and full of regulars who chat afterwards.
- Stay for the coffee. The coffee is where the friendship happens, not the run.
- Sign up for a race with the group. A shared goal three months out keeps people together.
